Hello DogAge, I can't mention one of our two dogs without including the other. Sally and Harri were both rescued from bleak lives that now seem far away and long ago. Harri, our goofy 2-1/2-year-old coonhound, was especially suffering before we rescued her. She had just had her second litter, she had an intestinal infection, still had uterine bleeding, and was heartworm positive. Thankfully, her vet was able to pull her through. Sally is our sweet shepherd mix who's about 4 years old. The two of them love to play keep-away with their toys and to show us how smart they are by dutifully following commands and doing tricks for treats. Thanks to DogAge, they now are more active outside, and they especially love to play with other dogs at the Bark Park. We love Sally and Harri soooo much, and they are soooo much fun; it's hard to remember life before they came to live with us in our definitely happy Forever Home! --CR & DR

Hello DogAge, Logan is the blonder of my two Spanish mastiffs and is still growing at 17 months of age. Huckleberry is 32 months old and is my "redhead." I was happy to discover Huckleberry's "real" DogAge through your Web site. The calculation came out to age 15, which is encouraging for a giant-breed dog. She's such a sweetie that I want her to live a long and healthy life. I didn't calculate Logan's DogAge, because I know from living with him that he's a big, gawky teenager, regardless of calculations! Thanks for the tips. --LG, IL

Hello DogAge, This is Bridget. She was rescued from an abusive home and now lives in the lap of luxury (most of the time quite literally). She is a 2-year-old golden retriever, and what a darling dog she is. With the help of DogAge, I was able to turn a frightened, starved, and lonely dog into the most loving and caring dog that my family has ever had. We are truly blessed to have Bridget in our lives. -SB

Hello DogAge, Our little Placido Domingo (but he doesn't sing) came to us when he was 6 years old, and he is now 13 and doing great. Your questions about how we treat our dog made me feel so good, because he is very active and fun to be around, and I do feed him carefully. He's a VERY GOOD DOG! --Arlene

Hello DogAge, These are my two babies . . . Picasso, the Staffy (nearly 8 years old), and Somer, the Labby (7.5 years old). They have been inseparable since my now husband and I got together 5 years ago. They are very spoiled by me, but in a good, healthy way, and people don't believe that they are actually as old as they are. DogAge has helped with extra tips for training and general health. --KH, Australia

Hello DogAge, All my dogs have benefited as a result of the suggestions on your Web site. These are my four Westies. McCarley was rescued from a shelter only a day away from euthanasia and has many behavioral issues, but is getting much better every day! Calvin and Casper have been with me since puppyhood, and Tallisker was another rescue, although she's very well adjusted and healthy. My special guys inspired me to volunteer, and I have since become the president of our local Humane Society Volunteers. I'd like to encourage others to volunteer and adopt to help our homeless animals. I read your article about black dog syndrome, and guess what . . . my next rescue will be a SCOTTY! --GS

Hello DogAge, Luke was adopted almost 10 years ago. He is a Rottweiler mix. He has a sweet disposition and is especially fond of little girls! He is the ambassador-at-large in our neighborhood for Rotties and has changed quite a few opinions about his breed. He was abandoned in a mountain region and was starving, just a walking skeleton, when we got him. He went to a training class with his "Mom," where she learned how to train him to be the good dog that he has become. Now, he lives to go on walks with Mom every day! He gets to come to work with her and loves being the "job dog." --CD

Hello DogAge, I found Cookie wandering the streets -- someone had left her to fend for herself. The vet guessed she was about 6 or 8 months when I found her -- or when she found me. She appears to have been abused at one time. She is the perfect sister to my shih tzu, Biscuit. He is 7 years old and somewhat shy. It has been a godsend that she joined our family. --GG

Hello DogAge, I regularly read your tips and articles for continued health for our 4-1/2-year-old beagle, Sherman. He's the greatest -- loving and sweet. He's the ultimate snuggler and loves to give love to everyone. Recently we discovered, after he began limping, that he had a ruptured disk in his back from jumping up into a truck, then falling back. He always tries to jump up before you can stop him -- then hurts himself. I read DogAge to find any and all help for our little man!! He's the best!!!!! He's our son! --VD

Hello DogAge, Our Lab-Mixes Autumn and Noel are best friends and Autumn tags along behind Noel wherever she goes. We find ways to involve them in everything we do, from taking them fishing to hiking in the woods, mountain biking or just playing around in the back yard.
I love getting the dog-age tips of the week to help make their lives as happy and healthy as possible. DogAge helps me know what plants to keep out of their reach in the house as well as what “people food” to make sure they don’t eat. THANKS DOG-AGE! --TD |

Hello DogAge, We are absolutely nuts about our dog Maximillion! He is a rescue dog we got a little over 3 years ago! He loves his walks and will begin to follow us around the house about 20 minutes before we are "scheduled" for our daily walks. He entertains the cat . . . sometimes by holding her ransom in the bathroom and sometimes just scooting her down the hallway! The dog park or "seeing the puppies" is one of his favorite things to do and he will RUN if we can keep up with the leash all the way in.

Hello DogAge, Rufus is our beloved terrier mix. I adopted Rufus from a Baltimore, Maryland, animal shelter 10 years ago, and they estimated that he was 3 years old at the time of his adoption. It was love at first sight! Rufus suffered terrible abuse and homelessness for the first 3 years of his life. We had a rough start; he was very unsure of his new owners and there was that other pesty issue of having a home and being housebroken, but he mastered everything . . . including winning our hearts.

Hello DogAge, Miska is a 3-month-old dachshund that has a mind of his own! He pushes his crate over to where he wants to go and then climbs up on top of the crate to get into stuff he shouldn't. It has also been really hard to find stuff that will amuse him and that he will chew on while I am gone. He is, however, very lovable.

Hello DogAge, Yukon was saved from an animal shelter in North Idaho. He is thought to be about 7 or 8 years old and is part Norwegian elk hound, part husky, and maybe even part wolf. He is very friendly to people (he suffers from separation anxiety) and quite tolerant of other dogs and cats. He shows absolutely no interest in fetching any thrown object, but he thinks squirrels are fascinating. We can't tell if he would like one for a toy, a friend, or a snack.

Hello DogAge, Jake is our beautiful German shepherd who was a rescue dog at 6 months old. After being cruelly treated, kicked, and tied up in a backyard in winter, he was scared, frightened, and could not even bark. As soon as we saw him in the rescue center we fell in love with his beautiful face. He is now in his 10th year; he is very intelligent, obedient, and a wonderful companion. He loves to play and is great with the grandchildren.

Hello DogAge, I have a very special dog who qualifies for Dog of the Month -- -- every month, any year. His name is Justice. Justice was rescued from a place that was shut down by the FDA.
Justice was terrified of everything! This past year, Justice has been working with a trainer and is now ready to take his Canine Good Citizen test. He's still a little skittish, but the most gentle, loving dog you could ever meet. When you look into those sweet brown eyes, you know he's an old soul.

Hello DogAge, This is my dog Zeus, he is Doberman/Lab mix. He stands 2 ½ feet tall and weighs 155 pounds. He is a Christmas baby and will be eight on December 25. Zeus thinks he is a human as sleeps with me back to back at night, he takes up the whole other side of the bed as you can imagine. He also likes to sit on the furniture as you can see in the attached picture and when I get ready for work in the morning he sits on the side of the tub. He is such a funny character and I wouldn’t trade him for anything. --LJ |

Hello DogAge, My dog, Kayla, is a Golden Lab, and has been coming to work with me since she was a pup. I manage a preschool and her participation in the program has been invaluable. Kayla has been our special aid by helping those children who are reluctant to stay or comforting a upset child. Now after 13 years she has arthritis and hip dysplasia but still everyday she can't wait to jump into car and "go to work". I still have children come back years later to visit the preschool and the first thing they ask is "where's Kayla?". She is even on our website. --BJ |

Dear DogAge, This is Briela the Amazing Affenpinscher. She’s 8 months old and was rescued from a commercial breeder. I flew to Wichita from Boston to pick her up on November 17th and she’s been settling in ever since.
As you can see from her picture, she quite likes to dress up, although this outfit is really not her style. Her Auntie bought this for her and indulged us with pictures so that we wouldn’t hurt Auntie’s feelings. She’s more of the Lauren or Pulitzer pooch style.

Dear DogAge, Hello. My name is Miles. I'm a 4 year-old golden retriever and I'm a Capricorn. I love walking in the park, swimming at Dog Beach, and chasing birds out of my backyard. I also like to roll over onto my back so my human can rub my belly. (I have him very well trained). :-) I love him so much! When he is watching TV, I like to lie on his feet to keep them warm. My favorite TV shows are America's Funniest Home Videos, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. --Miles, CA |
