Dog Health Conditions – Allergies (Food and Skin) |
Common signs of food allergies are inflamed, itchy skin around a dog's feet, face, ears, and "armpit" folds. In addition, recurring ear infections may indicate an allergic reaction. Your veterinarian can pinpoint the allergy-causing ingredient, which may take up to 12 weeks, and suggest a diet to manage the allergy. Your veterinarian will often recommend a therapeutic diet that is hypoallergenic.
Reducing or eliminating the dog's exposure to or contact with skin irritants such as grass, weeds, and certain shampoos, may help clear up dermatological symptoms. Anti-itch medication can help ease discomfort.
Dog allergy medications include chlorpheniramine, hydroxyzine, and prednisone. |
